100 Gigabit Ethernet: Bridge to Terabit Ethernet
April 21, 2009IT managers who are getting started with -- or even pushing the limits of -- 10 Gigabit Ethernet in their LANs and data centers won't have to wait long for higher speed connectivity.
Improving local storage capacity and flexibility
April 17, 2009I said it years ago, but it's even more true today: you can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much data storage. Now that you can buy hard drives holding a terabyte of data (1,000 gigabytes) for a little over US$100, you might think storage isn't a problem anymore. But upgrading storage across various desktops and laptops isn't really data storage, it's just data scattered. Organized storage takes some planning, so let's talk about three new products that will help you intelligently increase local storage capacity.
Review: 3 partition managers take on Vista's built-in tools
April 14, 2009Creating disk partitions can be useful for trying out a new operating system or managing several terabytes of data. We look at how three partition managers rate against Windows Vista's built-in tools.
Falling budgets force IT to update storage systems
April 13, 2009Attendees at last week's Storage Networking World conference are looking to use new technologies, including storage and server virtualization, to help offset declining IT budgets.
One foot on the ground and one in the clouds
April 9, 2009The early adopter "cloud crowd" makes the most headlines, but they're only the tip of the small business iceberg. Looking at various data storage vendor customer numbers has convinced me 90% of small businesses are still mostly land (or LAN) based. Some people don't yet trust Internet data storage, and some like to wear data storage suspenders with their data storage belts. The good news for both? Options for combo cloud and local storage hybrids continue to grow.
Fusion-io lands $47 million to develop flash storage
April 9, 2009Flash storage start-up Fusion-io has had a big start to 2009, remaking its management team with former Apple guru Steve Wozniak and just this week landing a US$47.5 million funding round.

Protect Your Data With Whole-Disk Encryption
March 20, 2009In my last post, I talked about some of the tools that claim to recover your stolen laptop. This time I want to review another series of tools that can be useful protection as well: doing whole-disk encryption of your hard drives across your enterprise. The idea that even if your laptop falls into the wrong hands, no one besides yourself will be able to read any of the files stored on it. When you boot your PC, you need to enter a password, otherwise the data in each file is scrambled, and no one else can gain access to your files.
